Those
dastardly domestic “hearings”: Improving the process and the
system
by James Funk
When I was a judge advocate representing sailors and Marines
at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center I believed that the
entire world was either pregnant or suffering from some fatal
disease. These were the most common reasons that sailors and
Marines left their duty stations without permission and were
prosecuted for either unauthorized absence or desertion. Since I
became the coordinator of the paralegal studies program at
Marion Technical College nearly 13 years ago, I have come to
believe that the entire world has had some interaction with
domestic relations or family court. Many of my students have
shared their personal experiences and, although there has not
been any scientific investigation of the comments, the
consistency of the themes forced me to think about those
dastardly domestic “hearings.“
